About this program

University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research (Center for Political Studies) administers the Hanes Walton, Jr. Endowment, awarding up to $6,000 in stipend funds to support graduate student professional development in racial and ethnic politics (e.g., travel for data collection, academic collaborations, conference participation, ISR summer courses, pilot dissertation research, or research equipment). Applicants must be U-M Political Science graduate students and submit a CV plus a two-page (single-spaced) project narrative with a header listing project title, dates, student and faculty advisor contact information; the narrative must describe the project purpose, the student’s role, collaboration elements, a simple budget by category, timeline, expected outcomes, and brief cover-sheet responses. The faculty advisor named on the application will be sent a copy and may be asked for a reference; recipients are required to submit a two- to three-page report on outcomes after project completion.
