About this program

The University of Michigan's Robert Kahn Fellowship for the Scientific Study of Social Issues provides annual dissertation support to one UM doctoral candidate whose empirical social-science research shows promise for innovatively addressing a major social problem. The award includes two semesters of candidate tuition, one calendar year of GradCare plus dental insurance, and a stipend of $48,000 (amount subject to change). Eligible applicants must be University of Michigan doctoral candidates who have advanced to candidacy (or equivalent), are eligible to accept the fellowship, and plan to complete their doctoral degree within one year of receiving funds. Applications require a CV, a project proposal (maximum three single‑spaced pages, excluding references) detailing the issue, hypotheses, design, budget and timeline, plus brief (3–5 sentence) responses to cover‑sheet questions; internal deadline is February 9, 2026.
