About this program

University of Michigan's George Katona Research Award in Economic Behavior funds emerging scholars investigating how economic expectations affect consumer behavior and the macroeconomy, providing a one-semester 0.5 GSRA-equivalent fellowship (stipend, GradCare, and candidate tuition) plus $3,000 in research support. The award is intended to jumpstart dissertation work early in doctoral candidacy and gives priority to projects using the Surveys of Consumers (SCA) or similar consumer survey data and to research on expectational measures. Applicants must be early-candidacy doctoral students in Economics at the University of Michigan; recipients may not hold another award concurrently and must limit paid employment to no more than 10 hours per week during the fellowship. Required materials are a CV and a project proposal (maximum three single-spaced pages, excluding references) plus brief (3–5 sentence) responses covering project goal, activities, timeline, expected outcomes, and budget; internal deadline 2026-02-09 (administrator: Abby Bossio).
