John W. Blassingame Award

About this program

Southern Historical Association offers the John W. Blassingame Award, a triennial $1,000 prize recognizing distinguished scholarship and mentorship in African American history, to be presented at the SHA annual meeting in 2027. Nominations must be submitted by SHA members via e-mail to the SHA Manager by May 1, 2027, and include a nominating letter describing the candidate’s accomplishments along with supporting letters. Candidates from all academic institutions (community/junior colleges, HBCUs, large research universities) are eligible and will be evaluated on mentoring of African American students, scholarly accomplishments, or both; the committee particularly welcomes letters from students for mentorship-focused nominations.
