Joseph J. Spengler Prize (Spengler Book Prize) for Best Book in the History of Economics

About this program

The History of Economics Society awards the Joseph J. Spengler Prize annually to the best original, authored scholarly book in the history of economics. The winner receives a $500 stipend, reimbursement of travel expenses up to $1,000 to attend the HES annual conference (53rd meeting: May 26–29, 2026, Nice, France), and a plaque presented at the banquet. Eligible works are original, authored (non‑edited) books or monographs in English published during the three calendar years preceding the meeting; textbooks and doctoral dissertations are ineligible. Up to two nominations per publisher are allowed (publishers must send a nominating note to the HES Secretary and ensure each judging committee member has a copy by December 31); individuals and HES members may self‑nominate, and a three‑member HES Selection Committee selects the winner.
