Lutheran Quarterly Annual Essay Prize for Young Scholars

About this program

Lutheran Quarterly offers an Annual Essay Prize for Young Scholars, awarding one $5,000 prize each year from 2024–2033 to nurture and reward early‑career scholarship in Lutheran history and theology. Eligible applicants are doctoral candidates working on dissertations or scholars within five years of receiving the PhD; authors must submit a standard journal‑length essay (6,000–7,000 words) aligned with Lutheran Quarterly’s aims, which will enter the journal’s normal double‑blind peer review process and, if published, may be a finalist. The editorial staff, chaired by the editor, selects the winner based on biblical, historical, and confessional grounding, originality, writing quality, and contemporary relevance; submissions are considered on a rolling basis and inquiries or submissions should be sent to Editor Paul Rorem (paul.rorem@ptsem.edu).
