Mary and Alfie Gray Award for Social Justice

About this program

The Association for Women in Mathematics offers the Mary and Alfie Gray Award for Social Justice to recognize vigorous and imaginative applications of the mathematical sciences that advance social justice in the United States and its territories. Awardees receive a $1,000 prize, certificate, and invitation to speak at a subsequent AWM Research Symposium; the award is presented at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in odd-numbered years. Nominees may be individuals or groups of any gender and need not be AWM members, and nominations may be submitted by anyone, including self-nominations, although at least one supporting letter must come from an AWM member. Nominations, accepted April 1–May 15 of even-numbered years through MathPrograms.org, require a one- to three-page nomination letter, a supporting letter, a brief citation, and a biography.
