About this program
TEDCO’s Maryland Innovation Initiative (MII), a partnership between the State of Maryland and five Maryland research universities (Johns Hopkins, Morgan State, UMB, UMBC, UMD College Park), funds commercialization of university‑discovered technologies through technology validation/market assessment and company formation. MII provides phased awards—Technology Assessment grants (up to $130,000 for sole applicants; up to $180,000 for joint applications) and Company Formation investments (up to $300,000), with sole applicants eligible for up to $430,000 across both phases. Eligible applicants are full‑time faculty at the qualifying universities for Technology Assessment and Maryland start‑ups that licensed university technology within 12 months for Company Formation; proposals must involve university‑owned, disclosed technologies with appropriate IP, include a Site Miner approval letter evidencing at least 30 days’ engagement, require a TEDCO ID, and are accepted on a quarterly deadline schedule (Jan 15, Apr 15, Jul 15, Oct 15).
