Minnesota Health Care Loan Forgiveness Program: Urban Physician Loan Forgiveness

About this program

The Minnesota Department of Health’s Office of Rural Health and Primary Care administers the Minnesota Health Care Loan Forgiveness Program to repay qualified educational loans for physicians practicing in underserved urban communities. Selected participants may receive $33,000 annually, up to four years and $132,000 total or the eligible loan balance, subject to available state funding. Eligible applicants include primary care, pediatric, family practice, internal medicine, psychiatric, and OB/GYN physicians who are practicing or completing their final residency year and commit to serving in a federally designated urban HPSA or MUA/P. Participants must provide at least 30 hours per week of direct patient care for a minimum of three years, live and work in Minnesota, and apply online during the November 1, 2026–January 6, 2027 application cycle.
