About this program

The Medical Research Council (MRC) offers the applicant‑led New Investigator Research Grant to support researchers taking the next step towards independent investigator roles for research within the MRC remit. Awards typically last three years; there is no formal upper limit on funding requests (typical full economic cost under £1M), MRC usually funds 80% of FEC and may cover up to 50% of the applicant’s salary. Applicants must demonstrate the skills and experience to transition to independence and have the support of an eligible host research organisation, with full eligibility and institutional requirements provided in MRC guidance. The scheme is open with no fixed closing date; shortlisting and funding decisions are held about three times a year and applicants are usually informed within 10 working days of a decision.
