The Smithsonian Institution’s Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) Data Science Lab offers a Machine Learning Postdoctoral Fellowship: a one-year appointment (renewable for a second year) supporting data-intensive research across the Smithsonian—including biodiversity genomics and machine learning applications for digitized museum collections—with a total package of $70,000 ($60,000 stipend, $5,000 health insurance, $5,000 research allowance). Fellows may propose independent projects or join existing collaborations across Smithsonian units and partner institutions, and may have the opportunity to become certified Carpentries instructors to teach data science skills. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in a relevant interdisciplinary field (e.g., biological sciences, social sciences, digital humanities, or technical disciplines such as computer science/NLP focused on historical data), demonstrate proficiency in Python and familiarity with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow, and have strong written and communication skills.
