Research funding
Postdoc
788 open programsCatalog updated
Postdoc funding splits into two things that look alike in a list and behave nothing alike. One is a fellowship that pays you, usually for one to three years, and follows you to the lab you choose. The other is a research grant your PI holds that happens to be open to postdocs. Both are here, and the program page says which is which.
The median award is $20,000, lower than people expect from the word fellowship, because the travel awards and meeting grants in the same pool pull it down. The salary-replacing fellowships sit far above it. The Naval Postgraduate School runs the largest single block of listings, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art funds postdoctoral work in art history on a scale most people outside the field never see.

Two traps show up repeatedly. Citizenship rules are common at this stage, and years-since-PhD windows are counted from the degree date rather than the start of the position. Neither is a field in this catalog, so read the source announcement.
