About this program

PEN America offers the 2026 PEN/Phyllis Naylor Grant for Children's and Young Adult Novelists, a $5,000 award to support an author of children's or young adult fiction in completing a novel-in-progress of high literary caliber. The grant aims to assist writers at a crucial career stage whose work has received critical acclaim but limited commercial success. Eligibility is limited to writers who have published one or more novels through a U.S. trade publisher, excluding self-published works, graphic novels, picture books, and co-authored manuscripts. Applicants must submit a cover letter, reviews, a recommendation letter, an outline, a letter of utility, and a manuscript sample by the June 1, 2025 deadline.
