Publication Subventions

About this program

The American Musicological Society (AMS) awards publication subventions—about $80,000 annually—to defray publication costs for works in music studies (books, essay collections, articles/chapters, special journal issues, and non‑print media); applications are due Feb 15 and Aug 15 each year. Individual applicants must be AMS members; awards up to $2,500 are considered and applicants may not have received an individual subvention within the past three years. Institutional applicants must be members of the Coalition of Music Organizations; institutional subventions up to $4,000 support reduced retail price, production costs, or increased accessibility of music publications. Required materials for individuals include a short abstract (≤1,000 words), draft manuscript, publication contract, and itemized budget (readers’ reports if available); institutions must submit the full electronic manuscript, readers’ reports, and a detailed financial statement; all awards must be claimed within 18 months and recipients must provide a copy of the final publication and documentation.
