About this program

The Coleopterists Society offers the Ross Taylor Bell and Joyce Rockenbach Bell Research Grant to support beetle research—preferentially taxonomy/systematics—by awarding one $5,000 USD grant for projects that would otherwise be unfunded; awarded funds must be spent within one year or returned. Allowable costs include fieldwork travel, expendable materials, analytical equipment time, travel to study/curate museum collections, and publication costs for The Coleopterists Bulletin; applicant salary is explicitly not allowable. Applicants must be members in good standing, demonstrate funding need, commit to depositing specimens in an institutional collection with long-term access, and obtain all required permits; awardees must acknowledge the grant, submit a short completion statement, and may be invited to present at the Society meeting. Applications (single-spaced, 12-pt Times, 1-inch margins) are due March 1 annually and must be emailed to Dr. Andrew Smith (asmith@nature.ca), including a two-page project description/justification, a one-page detailed budget totaling $5,000 USD, cited references, a 1–2 paragraph current funding statement, a one-paragraph specimen deposition statement, and confirmation of permit responsibility.
