About this program

The Ocean Protection Council offers flexible, direct grants through California’s Senate Bill 1 Sea Level Rise Tribal Cultural Resources Funding Program to help tribes assess and plan for sea-level-rise impacts on ancestral lands, tribal cultural resources, lifeways, and coastal areas. Eligible activities include pre-planning, community engagement, traditional knowledge and data collection, vulnerability assessments, adaptation priority setting, and culturally appropriate resilience strategies; awards generally range from $250,000 to $750,000 for projects lasting up to two years, with no matching funds required. Eligible applicants are federally recognized tribes or nonprofit organizations applying on behalf of non-federally recognized tribes, intertribal consortia, tribal conservation districts, or tribal partnerships. Applications are accepted on a rolling, quarterly basis and reviewed through first-come, first-served cycles.
