About this program

The Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI), funded by the Sophie and Shirley Cohen Memorial Fund and membership contributions, offers Grants‑in‑Aid to support scientific research on social problems aligned with SPSSI priorities, with particular encouragement for unique or timely projects, work at underrepresented institutions, graduate students and junior scholars, volunteer teams, and full (not pilot) studies. Awards provide up to $1,000 for pre‑doctoral research (strong preference for dissertation‑stage students) and up to $2,000 for researchers holding a Ph.D. (exceptional awards may exceed $2,000), and generally do not cover travel, living expenses, investigator stipends, manuscript preparation, or institutional indirect costs. Applicants must be SPSSI members (one application per deadline; ineligible if also applying to the Clara Mayo Grant in the same award year), and joint applications are allowed. Submissions require IRB documentation, a cover sheet and ≤100‑word abstract, a 5–7 page project narrative describing methods and relevance to SPSSI, investigator CV, budget, and a faculty sponsor recommendation for graduate applicants; deadlines are May 15 (spring) and October 15 (fall) with expedited review for time‑sensitive proposals.
