Summer Internship Fellowships (Duke Graduate School)

About this program

The Graduate School at Duke University offers Summer Internship Fellowships (SIF) to provide summer stipends, associated fringe, and the summer health fee for current Ph.D. students who lack full summer funding to pursue internships with community organizations, government agencies, NGOs, cultural institutions, or Duke hosts (for‑profit hosts are ineligible). Internships must be 12 weeks between mid‑May and mid‑August, limited to no more than 19.9 hours per week, may be in‑person, remote, or hybrid, and all recipients must enroll in GS950 (Experiential Learning Workshop); internal Duke hosts must provide a 50% match of the standard Ph.D. summer stipend. Eligible applicants are current Ph.D. students enrolled in the semester before and after the internship, not graduating before or during the summer term, must reside in North Carolina or an approved U.S. jurisdiction (international students should consult Duke Visa Services), and must obtain prior approval from their Director of Graduate Studies. Applications require DGS approval, a CV, official Duke transcript, a narrative, a host letter detailing projects and hours, advisor/DGS support letters, funding disclosures, and other materials; two application cycles are offered each year and priority may be given to first‑time SIF recipients.
