Stuart L. Bernath Lecture Prize

About this program

The Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations (SHAFR) offers the $1,000 Stuart L. Bernath Lecture Prize annually to recognize excellence in teaching and research by younger scholars of foreign relations. The awardee delivers a broad lecture on American foreign policy at the following SHAFR conference, receives up to $500 in travel expenses, and has the lecture published in Diplomatic History. Applicants must be under 40 or within 10 years of receiving their PhD as of June 2027, and nominations may be submitted by eligible organizations or as self-nominations. Nominations must include a letter, supporting letters, and the nominee’s CV and be sent to committee chair Kelly Shannon by February 1, 2027.
