Translation Fund

About this program

Publishers Association of New Zealand (PANZ), on behalf of Creative New Zealand, offers the Translation Fund to subsidize translations of New Zealand literature into foreign languages, contributing up to 50% of translation costs to a maximum of NZ$5,000 per title. Applications are accepted twice yearly and applicants are notified within four to six weeks of the closing date; funding rounds may not proceed if available funds have been expended earlier in the calendar year. Eligible applicants are established foreign publishers buying foreign‑language rights with an active backlist of at least four titles, or New Zealand publishers with a well‑regarded programme of NZ authors and established partnerships for translation and international distribution. Applicants must provide completed, signed sales and translation contracts at the time of application (showing a firm commitment to publish), the translation must be prior to printing, and no more than two grants will be awarded to any one publisher per year; priority is given to projects aligned with Creative New Zealand’s international market development activities.
