708 open programsCatalog updated
The humanities have the deepest network of small private funders of any area in this catalog, and this hub is one of the largest as a result. Fellowships are the biggest named category, ahead of research projects, the reverse of most science hubs, and it reflects how the field works: the scarce resource is time, not equipment.
The sponsors are almost entirely learned societies and subject associations. The Archaeological Institute of America runs the largest block. The Association for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies, the American Folklore Society, the Society for Ethnomusicology, the American Musicological Society and the Design History Society all run multiple programs. Membership requirements are the norm.

The median award is $3,000, weighted toward travel, archival research and publication subvention rather than salary replacement. Publication and editorial support is a category in its own right, with around forty open programs, and it is the least contested money in the field because most people do not think to look for it.
