About this program

The Mycological Society of America (MSA) offers the Undergraduate Research Award to provide monetary support for undergraduate (sophomore–senior) research in fungal biology (e.g., medical mycology, cell biology, physiology, systematics, evolution, genomics, ecology), administered by the MSA Student Awards Committee. Applicants must be undergraduate students conducting independent or directed research under a faculty mentor and are strongly encouraged to be MSA members. Required materials submitted via the online form include an application, CV (≤3 pages), a 2‑page single‑spaced research proposal/plan of study, official transcripts, and a mentor letter submitted directly by the mentor; indirect costs are not allowed. Awardees must supply a short bio and photo, complete W‑9/W‑8 tax forms prior to payment, retain receipts, contribute a short general‑audience article within one year, and make every effort to attend the MSA annual meeting; notifications are typically sent about 45 days after the deadline.
