Virgil Thomson Fellowship

About this program

The Society for American Music offers the Virgil Thomson Fellowship, a competitive award of up to $4,000 to support scholars at any career stage conducting research on the history, creation, and analysis of American music for stage and screen (including opera), funding expenses such as travel, books, and media resources. Applicants must be members in good standing of the Society for American Music, and projects that have previously received SAM fellowship support are ineligible. Application materials include an application form, a project description (up to 500 words), a plan of work (up to 500 words), and a detailed budget; recipients must submit a one-page budget and a final report to the Executive Director within one year of the award. Deadline: October 15.
