Walter H. Bucher Medal — AGU Union Medal for contributions to crust and lithosphere

About this program

The American Geophysical Union (AGU) awards the Walter H. Bucher Medal annually to a senior scientist for original, lifetime contributions to the basic knowledge of the Earth's crust and lithosphere, covering disciplines such as seismology, tectonophysics, geochemistry, volcanology, geodesy, paleomagnetism, mineral and rock physics, and near‑surface and deep‑Earth studies. Recipients receive an engraved medal, induction into the AGU College of Fellows (subject to membership/fellowship rules), recognition at AGU’s annual meeting, and two tickets to the Honors Reception. Nominees must be experienced senior scientists and established leaders whose sustained body of work demonstrates fundamental scientific insights; nominators and co‑nominators must be active AGU members, and self‑ or peer‑nominations are permitted. All parties must follow AGU’s conflict of interest and professional conduct policies; nominations are evaluated on long‑term scientific excellence and the submission window is 5 January–2 March (questions: honors@agu.org).
