The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) awards the Zdeněk P. Bažant Medal for Failure and Damage Prevention to senior-level career civil engineers or engineering scientists whose work (papers, books, patents or inventions) has made significant contributions to the engineering science of failure and damage prevention; the prize includes a medal and an honorarium funded by an endowment (reported at $45,000). Established in 2015 and typically awarded in even-numbered years, recipients are selected by a committee formed by the Engineering Mechanics Institute (EMI) and approved by the ASCE Executive Committee. Candidates must be nominated via the ASCE nomination form with a nominator-signed cover letter, the nominee’s CV/biographical information, and two to three letters of recommendation; nominations are open to all nationalities and ASCE membership is given preference only when candidates are otherwise equal.
