AIPS Senior and Junior Research Fellowships

About this program

The American Institute of Pakistan Studies (AIPS) offers Senior (post‑doctoral) and Junior (pre‑doctoral) Research Fellowships to fund 2 to less than 9‑month research projects; funding for U.S. citizens is provided by the U.S. Department of State/ECA through CAORC while limited support for non‑U.S. citizens comes from AIPS—note AIPS is not currently awarding fellowships and applicants should check back in November 2026. Applicants must be AIPS individual members in good standing, submit a reasonable budget, and understand fellowships cannot replace salary; review is competitive and priority may be given to applicants who have not held an AIPS fellowship in the past two years. Eligibility and allowable research locations vary by fellowship level and citizenship (e.g., Junior U.S. applicants may not conduct research in Pakistan or the U.S.; non‑U.S. Junior applicants may conduct research in Pakistan but not include additional countries), and funds for non‑U.S. applicants are limited. Fellows must complete their award in a single trip, cannot bring spouses/dependents to Pakistan, Islamabad/Lahore fellows are expected to use AIPS guesthouses, proposed countries must not have U.S. State Department travel restrictions, and stipends will follow ECA/State rates as set by the Fellowships Committee.
