AIYS U.S. Scholars Research Fellowship for Yemeni Studies

About this program

The American Institute for Yemeni Studies (AIYS), supported by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, offers an annual U.S. Scholars Research Fellowship to support advanced research on Yemen and Yemeni Studies; fellowship funds must be used for research conducted outside the United States and outside Yemen due to a current travel ban. Awards are typically up to $5,000 and require a detailed budget (with specific allocations for multi‑researcher projects); AIYS’s fellowship committee determines final funding levels and applicants may need additional funds for extended research or extra expenses. Eligible applicants are U.S. citizens who are full‑time graduate students or post‑graduate scholars in any discipline; collaborative or group projects (including with Yemeni researchers) are permitted provided research is carried out outside the U.S. and Yemen. Required application materials include an application form, a research proposal (up to 2,000 words), CV, two letters of support (and transcripts for graduate students); awardees must obtain any necessary research permits, acknowledge AIYS in publications, and submit a 3–5 page final report and financial accounting within six months of project completion.
