Alate Award

About this program

The Entomological Society of America’s Alate Award provides travel support for students enrolled at Historically Black Colleges and Universities and other Minority‑Serving Institutions to attend the ESA Annual Meeting, covering airfare, up to five nights’ hotel, meeting registration, ground transportation reimbursement, and a per diem; five awards plus one sponsored by the Plant‑Insect Ecosystems Section are given, with Diversity & Inclusion committee members serving as meeting mentors. Eligible applicants are current ESA student members (B.S., M.S., or Ph.D.) enrolled at an MSI listed in the Rutgers MSI Eligibility Matrix who are studying entomology or entomology‑related research and who plan to present a 10‑minute talk, poster, or infographic at the Annual Meeting. Nominations are submitted electronically via the Alate Award nomination website and must include a cover letter/personal statement, one letter of recommendation, a presentation plan (title, subtopic, authors, abstract), an unofficial transcript, and a CV or two‑page biographical resume, all conforming to specified file and formatting requirements. Complete nomination packets—including a signed professional conduct disclosure—must be received by ESA headquarters by June 1; nominations may be made by anyone (maximum two self‑nominations per year), packets are retained for two years, and renomination is permitted up to two additional times within that period.
