Amber Brown Grant

About this program

The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) awards the annual Amber Brown Grant to one school to promote reading and writing with an author/illustrator visit (in-person for U.S. schools, virtual for non-U.S. winners), a $250 event stipend, and $250 in books by the visiting author/illustrator. The prize honors Paula Danziger and often focuses on picture books; SCBWI reserves the right not to confer the award in a given year. Any school—public or private, large or small, domestic or international—may be nominated; nominators need not be SCBWI members but a statement of support from the school principal is required. Applications are submitted via the SCBWI awards portal and must include a description of the school population and prior visits, up to three selected book types with explanations, and a brief (≤150 words) plan describing how the session will celebrate reading in the spirit of Paula Danziger; current postings indicate submissions may be closed.
