Américo Paredes Prize

About this program

The American Folklore Society (AFS), in partnership with its Committee on Cultural Diversity, the Chicana/Chicano Section, the Folklore Latino, Latinoamericano y Caribeño Section, and the AFS Executive Board, awards the annual Américo Paredes Prize ($500) to recognize outstanding integration of scholarship and engagement with the communities one studies or to honor teaching that encourages scholars and practitioners to work within their own cultures. The prize can be awarded for various forms of accomplishment—books, articles, exhibits, software, sustained engaged teaching, or demonstrable community impact—that reflect Paredes’s cross-disciplinary, socially engaged legacy. Nominations are submitted via the AFS prize application form by August 15 each year, and nominees not selected are retained for consideration in two subsequent review cycles.
