About this program

The Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, in partnership with The New‑York Historical Society, offer a residential 10‑month fellowship (Sept 9, 2026–June 30, 2027) supporting an early‑career scholar whose research expands understanding of New York State, City, and Long Island history; the fellowship provides a $60,000 stipend plus benefits. The research project must be based on and conducted using the collections and resources of The New‑York Historical Society. Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. at least one year before the fellowship start date and submit a 2–3 page proposal identifying critical NYHS resources, a curriculum vitae, a short writing sample (≤3,000 words or 10 pages), and three letters of recommendation. Applications are submitted via Interfolio and are due Jan 11, 2026 (11:59 PM Eastern).
