Foundation is the largest sponsor category in this catalog and the least uniform. It covers private research foundations that fund investigator-initiated science, disease foundations that fund one condition, and community foundations that fund whatever happens in one county.
That mix is worth knowing before you scan. The Community Foundation of Noble County, Stark Community Foundation and Berkshire Taconic appear near the top by volume, and their programs are geographically restricted in a way a national research foundation's are not. If you are outside their service area, skip them. The research funders sit alongside: the World Wildlife Fund, the Dermatology Foundation, the Mark Foundation for Cancer Research, BrightFocus.

The median award is $21,900 and under a quarter carry a dated deadline. Rolling applications are more common here than in any other sponsor type, which helps if your timeline does not match a federal cycle.
Foundation review is also shorter and more program-officer-driven than federal review, so a conversation before you apply changes the outcome more often than it does elsewhere.
