ASH Bridge Grant

About this program

The American Society of Hematology (ASH) offers the Bridge Grant, a $150,000 award to support MDs, PhDs, and MD–PhDs conducting malignant or classical (non‑malignant) hematology research who have recently applied for an NIH R01 or equivalent and need interim funding. Applicants must be ASH members in good standing, the PI or co‑PI on an R01/R01‑equivalent submitted to NIH within the past 18 months (counting from the R01 review date), hold a faculty‑equivalent position at an eligible institution, and have no more than $500,000/year in other research funding at award activation; if the base R01 is funded prior to award notification, the Bridge Grant must be declined. Complete Bridge applications must include original R01 materials (specific aims, summary statement and response to critiques for standard submissions; research strategy for modified submissions without NIH critiques) and the award may be used for PI salary/fringe, research personnel, supplies, justified travel, and equipment up to $10,000. As of 2025, prior Bridge recipients may reapply and applicants whose R01 was reviewed but not discussed or not yet critiqued may apply under modified requirements; individuals eligible for the ASH Scholar Award or holding concurrent ASH awards are ineligible.
