Ashley Bryan Award

About this program

The Texas Library Association Black Caucus Round Table offers the Ashley Bryan Award, a $1,000 cash prize and plaque recognizing Black authors whose children's and young adult literature advances humanity, diversity, culture, and community; the award alternates yearly and the 2027 prize (honoring a body of work) will be presented at the TLA 2027 Annual Conference in San Antonio. Nominations may be submitted only by active BCRT members; eligible nominees are Black authors of U.S.-published children’s or YA books (self-published works are ineligible). Selection emphasizes demonstrated humanity, cultural appreciation, relevance to youth and librarians, and expansion of readers’ perspectives; finalists must agree to attend the TLA conference and serve as speakers at the BCRT Author Brunch. Nominations open March 29, 2026 and close in June (specific closing date provided on the award timeline).
