Athelstan Spilhaus Award

About this program

The American Geophysical Union (AGU) annually awards the Athelstan Spilhaus Award to individuals who significantly enhance public engagement with Earth and space sciences, recognizing leaders who convey the excitement, significance, and beauty of these fields (established 2006). Nominations (peer or self) are accepted yearly from 5 January to 2 March; nominators must be active AGU members. Nominees may be early-, middle-, or experienced-career scientists, and selection emphasizes quality and impact of work, reach to broad or traditionally underrepresented audiences, and originality/innovation. Recipients receive an engraved award, recognition at AGU’s annual meeting and two Honors Reception tickets; all parties must comply with AGU ethics and conflict-of-interest policies (contact: honors@agu.org).
