Bernadotte E. Schmitt Research Grants in European, African, or Asian History

About this program

The American Historical Association offers Bernadotte E. Schmitt Research Grants of up to $1,500 to support research in progress on the history of Europe, Africa, or Asia. Funds may cover travel, archival and library access, reproduction costs, research assistance, childcare, and other related expenses for use during the 15 months following the award. Applicants must be AHA members, with preference given to advanced doctoral students, non-tenured faculty, and unaffiliated scholars; applicants may receive no more than $1,500 in combined AHA research grants within five years. Applications require a CV, a project statement of up to 750 words, and a one-page bibliography; the 2026 deadline was February 15, 2026, and submissions are currently closed.
