Bernadotte E. Schmitt Research Grants in European, African, or Asian History

About this program

The American Historical Association offers Bernadotte E. Schmitt Research Grants of up to $1,500 to support research in progress on the history of Europe, Africa, or Asia. Funds may cover travel, archival and library access, reproduction costs, research assistance, childcare, and other related expenses for use within 15 months of the award. Applicants must be AHA members; preference is given to advanced doctoral students, nontenured faculty, and unaffiliated scholars with specific research needs, and no applicant may receive more than $1,500 from AHA research grants within five years. Applications require a CV, a project statement of up to 750 words, a one-page bibliography, and budget information; the 2026 deadline was February 15, 2026.
