The Medieval Academy of America administers the Birgit Baldwin Fellowship in French Medieval History, an endowed award that provides $20,000 (with possible renewal for a second year) to support a graduate student’s Ph.D. dissertation research requiring sustained archival and library work in France. It funds a year of in‑country research at French archives and libraries to complete a significant dissertation on any subject in French medieval history. Eligible applicants are enrolled graduate students at North American universities whose dissertation project can only be realized through extended research in French repositories; selection is competitive and managed by the Academy’s Baldwin Committee.
