About this program
NewFest's Black Filmmakers Initiative provides funding and festival-related cost assistance—including cash prizes, submission-fee waivers, travel subsidies, and free tickets to Black-led organizations—to support Black LGBTQ+ filmmakers and reduce barriers to festival participation. Awards and assistance are distributed in connection with the New York LGBTQ+ Film Festival, including Emerging Black LGBTQ+ Filmmaker awards announced at the festival. Eligible applicants are Black filmmakers producing LGBTQ+ stories that center Black characters and voices. To request a submission-fee waiver or seek festival support, submit information about your completed and eligible project to submissions@newfest.org and follow NewFest’s submission guidance.
