Bryer Postgraduate Travel Fund — travel grants for postgraduate Byzantine studies

About this program

The Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies’ Bryer Postgraduate Travel Fund offers small grants (currently up to £500, applicants are advised to request up to £200) to support innovative, experimental travel-related research by postgraduate researchers in Byzantine studies—such as visits to museum collections or archaeological sites, language immersion, landscape surveys, or recreating historical journeys. Deadlines are seasonal: 1 March (for travel 1 April–30 September) and 1 September (for travel 1 October–31 March), and awards may be split between multiple recipients. Eligible applicants are early-career postgraduate researchers registered (or with an imminent offer) at a UK higher-education institution; projects must have a clear research purpose within Byzantine studies and exclude conference attendance as the main purpose, with preference for those who cannot otherwise fund the travel. Applications must be a single Word document (including contact details, confirmation of degree/registration, amount requested with budget, a project proposal up to 2,000 words, and an academic reference up to two pages or a written request for interview) and are reviewed by a three-person SPBS committee.
