Cheryl Allyn Miller Award

About this program

Sociologists for Women in Society (SWS) offers the annual Cheryl Allyn Miller Award to a sociology graduate student or recent Ph.D. (within two years) whose scholarly research, policy research, or activism makes an outstanding contribution to the study of women and paid work; the prize includes $500, complimentary registration and recognition at the SWS Winter Conference, plus up to $500 for travel. Applicants must be graduate students or within two years of a Ph.D., working on topics related to women and employment (including self‑employment, informal or illegal work); eligible work may be completed or near completion but not a proposal. Applications are submitted via the SWS Membership Portal by April 1 and must include an application letter explaining alignment with award goals, an abstract and a journal‑ready manuscript up to 30 double‑spaced pages (bibliography included), and a CV; recipients must attend the Winter Conference and submit a brief report (max 3 pages) by August 30. Non‑members must complete the Member Engagement Form and allow 7–10 business days for registration processing.
