Chrétien International Research Grants

About this program

The American Astronomical Society administers the Chrétien International Research Grants, providing up to US$20,000 annually to support international collaborative observational astronomy with emphasis on long-term foreign visits, development of close working relationships, and innovative technical approaches. Awards may cover travel, salary, publication costs, and small research equipment and are paid as single payments to individual principal investigators (no institutional overhead). Eligible applicants are professional astronomers holding a PhD (graduate students are ineligible); applications (due April 1) must include a ≤3‑page project description emphasizing international collaboration and arranged visits, a CV and bibliography, proposed budget and justification, and two reference letters. Decisions are announced in September by an international committee, with preference for high‑promise applicants who are otherwise unfunded; awards normally will not supplement major funded projects.
