Cornelius Hopper Disparities Supplement (CHDS)

About this program

The Cornelius Hopper Disparities Supplement (CHDS), administered by the Tobacco‑Related Disease Research Program (TRDRP), provides supplemental training funds to build capacity for research on tobacco priority populations in California, awarding up to $20,000 (direct costs) per year for one or two years as an add‑on to an eligible parent grant. Eligible mentors are PIs or designated Co‑PIs on specified TRDRP mechanisms (e.g., Research Awards, Pilot Awards, New Investigator Awards, Thirdhand Smoke Awards, Tobacco Policy Research Centers, and Co‑PIs of CPPRAs and partnered MSCIs) with at least one year remaining on the parent award (no‑cost extensions excluded) and must provide a tailored training plan integrating the trainee into the parent project. Applicants must reside in California and be undergraduate, master’s, or pre‑candidacy doctoral students, or community members without prior research experience in tobacco control (individuals with advanced degrees are ineligible); PIs must notify their TRDRP Program Officer of intent and submit CHDS requests with the annual progress report per the CHDS application instructions.
