The American Geophysical Union (AGU) awards the annual David Perlman Award for Excellence in Science Journalism — News to journalists or small teams for outstanding news reporting (deadline one week or less) that makes Earth and space sciences accessible; winners receive $5,000, an engraved award, recognition in Eos and at AGU’s Annual Meeting, up to $1,000 travel reimbursement, two Honors Banquet tickets, and complimentary press registration. Eligible work is a news story or series in any medium except books, published in English (or with an English translation), and judged on accuracy, initiative, clarity, originality, importance and timeliness. Applicants may be freelance or employed journalists, or groups of up to four, and self-nominations are accepted; nominees need not be AGU members, may submit one entry per year, and must not have won the Perlman Award in the past two years. Entries must name a nominee who is an author or contributor to the submitted piece and comply with AGU’s conflict-of-interest and professional conduct policies.
