Devendra Lal Memorial Medal

About this program

The American Geophysical Union (AGU) awards the annual Devendra Lal Memorial Medal to an early‑ or mid‑career scientist who is a citizen of and works in a World Bank‑designated low‑ or lower‑middle‑income country, recognizing outstanding research in any Earth or space science discipline; the honor includes an engraved medal, Union Fellowship, lifetime AGU membership, possible induction into the AGU College of Fellows (if eligibility criteria are met), an invitation to present at AGU’s annual meeting, and two Honors Reception tickets. Nominees are evaluated on scientific excellence, scientific impact, and scientific citizenship. Eligible candidates must be non‑U.S. based, within roughly 10–20 years of receipt of their Ph.D. or highest equivalent degree, and may be self‑nominated or nominated by peers (nominators must be active AGU members); nominations are typically accepted annually from 5 January to 2 March and all parties must comply with AGU ethics and conflict‑of‑interest policies.
