About this program
The British Association for Biological Anthropology and Osteoarchaeology (BABAO), supported by an anonymous donor, offers the Don Brothwell (undergraduate) and Holger Schutkowski (master’s) awards to recognise outstanding student theses in biological anthropology and osteoarchaeology, including areas such as palaeopathology, bioarchaeology, genomics and stable isotope or imaging methods. Each winner receives £50, one year of BABAO membership and the opportunity to present their research at the following year’s BABAO conference; winners are announced within about three months and awards are presented at the AGM in September. Eligible dissertations must have been submitted to a UK university within the past academic year (Don Brothwell for undergraduate theses; Holger Schutkowski for master’s), with some exceptions for distance learners whose grades are delayed. Nominations must be made by BABAO members who are staff at UK universities (one dissertation per award per department), and the nominator must obtain the student’s consent and submit an anonymised PDF of the thesis plus a completed application form to the BABAO Grants Secretary; submission windows are September (Don Brothwell) and January (Holger Schutkowski).
