Edward Kidson Medal — medal for exceptional scientific achievement in meteorology/climatology

About this program

The Meteorological Society of New Zealand awards the Edward Kidson Medal biennially to recognise exceptional scientific achievement in meteorology or climatology and to promote interest in atmospheric, weather and climate science, particularly relating to New Zealand; the award is a medal with no specified monetary prize. Eligible applicants are individual researchers or practitioners who are financial members of the Society and are normally resident in New Zealand or have significant connections to New Zealand. Candidates must show either a recent high‑quality refereed paper or outstanding publicly available scientific report, or demonstrate sustained leadership and significant long‑term scientific contributions with public outputs that advance meteorology/climatology; nominations must include a detailed supporting statement, the key outputs, the nominee’s CV and contact details for two internationally recognised referees (self‑nominations require an additional letter of support). Nominations are assessed by the Society’s awards sub‑committee (submit to awards@metsoc.org.nz), the medal will only be conferred if nominations of sufficient merit are received, and the recipient is presented at the Society’s annual conference and encouraged to give an invited talk; the next call for nominations will be made in 2026.
