Forest Fungal Ecology Research Award

About this program

The Mycological Society of America’s Forest Fungal Ecology Research Award funds ecological studies of fungal interactions in old-growth forests or other unique/endangered ecosystems, prioritizing innovative approaches to interactions of individual fungi or fungal groups with hosts or substrates (purely floristic or systematic studies are ineligible). Applicants must be current MSA members or have applied at the time of submission and be Masters or PhD students, recent PhD recipients, or, in some cases, honors/BA–BS thesis students. Required materials are an application form, a CV (max 3 pages), and a detailed plan of study (single-spaced, ≤5 pages) that includes a 200–250 word abstract, introduction, objectives, methods, significance/preliminary results, budget and justification with a ~1-year timeline and dissemination plan, and references; include permit documentation if needed and a letter of support from the major professor uploaded via the award portal. Indirect costs are not allowed; award logistics note that amounts are unspecified, awardees must complete W‑9/W‑8 tax forms before disbursement, are expected to make efforts to attend the annual MSA meeting, and will be asked to provide a short biography, photo, and a short research article within a year; deadline stated as February 1 by midnight Pacific Time.
