George Macdonald Medal

About this program

The George Macdonald Medal, jointly awarded by the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSTMH) and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), recognises senior researchers whose work has led to significant improvements in health in the tropics and is conferred every three years (next nominations open 2026); the award is a medal rather than a monetary grant. Eligible nominees are senior researchers whose research demonstrably improved tropical health, and nominations must be proposed by LSHTM Senate or RSTMH Trustees (or by proposers approved by those bodies). A selection committee—comprising the Director of LSHTM, two LSHTM Senate members and two RSTMH Trustees (not LSHTM employees)—chooses the recipient from proposals, with final ratification by LSHTM Senate and RSTMH Trustees.
