About this program

Wenner-Gren Foundation’s Global Initiatives Grant supports a small number of innovative projects that strengthen the discipline of anthropology by creating conditions for better research and public engagement, with 2026–2030 priority given to public anthropology projects that reach broad audiences (e.g., outreach campaigns, curriculum partnerships, media training, applied incubators, crisis interventions). One nonrenewable award of up to US$80,000 is made annually (no institutional overhead covered) and there is no limit on project duration; the application portal opens two months before the annual deadline (typically May 15 for projects beginning Jan 1) and reviews can take up to six months. The primary organizer must hold a doctorate in anthropology or a related field and be affiliated with an organization able to carry forward project outcomes; applicants of any nationality may apply and graduate students may participate as co-applicants. Applications must be submitted in English through the online portal (alternative arrangements available for limited internet access) and awardees must comply with U.S. laws including OFAC sanctions, which may require special documentation for certain countries/regions.
